My husband loves a gadget and was impressed by the pop up downdraft extractor fan in the showroom over the weekend. These are the extractor fans that pop up from the surface when you use them (i had never heard of them!). Would love to hear about any experiences.

We briefly looked at them. I was advised that they are noisier and also not quite as effective. Good though for an island unit if you have a low ceiling and don’t want an extractor in your eyeline.

We bought one as I am a techy geek as well. Really pleased with it as it doesn’t clutter up the kitchen. Ours is a Siemens downdraft extractor and I would recommend it. It looks good and works effectively for us.

I would go for a ceiling extractor. Getting a downdraft installed is labour intensive so ends up pricey. Plus they are not effective at removing the steam as heat rises, so most of the cooking steam and smells end up in the kitchen. They also take up room on the surface behind your cooker.
